Homes for the Future - A new analysis of housing need and demand in England

Summary:
This report draws on the latest evidence to derive up-to-date estimates of housing need and demand. It demonstrates that the Yorkshire and Humberside is facing a severe shortage of affordable homes, a problem that lies at the heart of the country’s housing crisis.

The research highlights the 270,070 households on social housing waiting lists in the Yorkshire and Humberside region alone. Almost 2,000 homeless households are trapped in temporary accommodation and 37,000 across all sectors are living in overcrowded conditions. As the number of households increases, the housing shortage will only get worse, unless we can increase the delivery of affordable homes.

The report demonstrates the need to build more social rented and intermediate homes than currently envisaged and for action to be taken to meet the funding gap that the housing market downturn has created.
